Things to Do Near San José: Visit Irazú Volcano, Cartago, and the Orosi Valley
San José: Irazú Volcano, Cartago City, and Orosi Valley Tour
We run our own tours in Puerto Viejo and love exploring the rest of Costa Rica. When we find experiences worth sharing, we write about them here.
When we booked the San José: Irazú Volcano, Cartago City, and Orosi Valley Tour, we wanted to experience a completely different side of Costa Rica. Living on the Caribbean coast, we are surrounded by rainforest and beaches most of the time, so the idea of standing on top of the country’s highest active volcano, walking through a historic city, and exploring one of the most beautiful valleys in the Central Highlands sounded like the perfect day trip from San José. This tour turned out to be the kind of experience that shows you the variety of Costa Rica in a single day.
The Drive to Irazú Volcano
The morning began with a hotel pickup in San José and a drive out of the city along the Pan-American Highway. As we left the urban sprawl behind, the road wound higher into the mountains, and the scenery quickly shifted to rolling farmlands. The slopes of Irazú are fertile, and it seemed like every patch of land was covered with crops. Our guide explained how the volcanic soil makes the area perfect for growing potatoes, onions, cabbages, and all kinds of vegetables, and as we drove, we saw farmers working in the fields.
The road climbed steadily, and the air grew cooler as we gained elevation. By the time we reached the entrance to the national park, the landscape felt almost otherworldly, with sparse vegetation and views stretching across hills and valleys. At 3,432 meters above sea level, Irazú is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica, and standing at the summit was a surreal experience.
The Summit Views
On a clear day, you can see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans from the top of Irazú, and while not every visit gets that kind of visibility, we were lucky enough to arrive as the clouds cleared. The crater itself was massive, with gray ash slopes leading down to a green lake in the center. Around us, the views reached out to the horizon, and the air felt crisp and thin.
Our guide timed it perfectly, giving us plenty of space to explore the crater viewpoints and take photos. He pointed out landmarks in the distance and explained the history of past eruptions, which helped us appreciate the scale of what we were seeing. The wind was cold at the summit, so a jacket came in handy, but it was worth every moment to stand on top of one of Costa Rica’s most famous volcanoes.
Cartago and the Basilica
From the heights of Irazú, the tour descended into the city of Cartago, which was once the capital of Costa Rica. The highlight here was the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, one of the country’s most important religious sites. From the outside, the basilica is striking with its arched façade and tiled roof, but stepping inside is what really captures your attention.
The vaulted ceilings soared overhead, and stained glass windows filled the space with colored light. People knelt in prayer at the altar, and our guide explained the story of the Black Madonna, the small statue found here in the 17th century that is now the focus of an annual pilgrimage where thousands of Costa Ricans walk for days to reach the basilica. Even if you are not religious, the atmosphere of devotion and the beauty of the architecture make this stop memorable.
The Orosi Valley
After leaving Cartago, we continued into the Orosi Valley, an area that feels like a postcard version of Costa Rica. Rolling hills, coffee plantations, rivers, and forests filled the landscape, and every turn in the road seemed to reveal another incredible view. Our guide even stopped at a lookout point where we could take in the valley from above, and it was one of those scenes where everyone pulled out their cameras at once.
The Orosi Valley is also home to one of the oldest colonial churches still standing in Costa Rica. Visiting it gave us a sense of the country’s past, and it was a contrast to the grand basilica we had just seen in Cartago. The small whitewashed church with its simple wooden interior felt quiet and timeless.
Lunch and Local Flavor
By the time we reached the valley, it was time for lunch, and the tour included a meal at a local restaurant. The food was traditional Costa Rican, with rice, beans, plantains, meat, and fresh juice, and it was the kind of meal that felt hearty after spending the morning in the cold air of the volcano. Some tours also stop at a coffee farm or garden along the way, which adds even more to the experience, and in our case, we had time for a quick coffee stop that gave us a chance to try beans grown in the region.
Why We Recommend This Tour
What we loved most about the San José: Irazú Volcano, Cartago City, and Orosi Valley Tour was how much variety it offered in a single day. We went from standing at the summit of a volcano to walking through a historic basilica to eating a local lunch in the middle of one of the most beautiful valleys in the country. The guides made the trip even better, answering questions, adjusting the pace, and pointing out little details that gave us a better understanding of the history and culture of the region.
It was also well timed. At the volcano, our guide made sure we arrived during a clear window so we could see the crater without fog, and later in the day, the drive down through Cartago and into the valley felt like a natural progression rather than a rushed schedule.
