Costa Rica Full Day Tour: Explore Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall, and Hot Springs
Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall, and Hot Springs Tour
We run our own tours in Puerto Viejo and love exploring the rest of Costa Rica. When we find experiences worth sharing, we write about them here.
When we booked the Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall, and Hot Springs Tour, we wanted to see if it was really possible to fit so many highlights of La Fortuna into one day. The schedule promised a hike along the river, time at the La Fortuna Waterfall, lunch and a cultural stop at a Maleku village, a walk through the forest and lava fields near Arenal Volcano, and a visit to the hot springs to close out the day. What surprised us was how smoothly it all flowed together, and how much variety we experienced without ever feeling like we were being rushed from one place to the next.
Starting the Day in La Fortuna
The morning began with a hotel pickup, which made everything simple. Within a short drive we reached the trail along the La Fortuna River, where the guides introduced themselves and set an easygoing tone that carried through the rest of the day. They kept the group moving at a steady pace but always gave us time to stop, look around, and enjoy the scenery.
Walking by the river was a relaxed start, with the sound of water following us as we moved through the trees. At one point we crossed a suspension bridge with a wide view of the canyon below, and later we climbed onto a tractor cart that carried us up to a panoramic viewpoint. From there, the forest stretched out in every direction, and it was the kind of view that made you pause for a moment before continuing.
The La Fortuna Waterfall
The hike down to the La Fortuna Waterfall was one of the most rewarding parts of the morning. The staircase wound through thick jungle, and as soon as we reached the bottom, the falls came into view. The water dropped 70 meters into a pool surrounded by mossy canyon walls and volcanic rocks, and the sound was strong enough that it echoed across the valley.
Some people swam in the cool water while others stayed on the rocks and took photos, but no matter what you chose to do, it was an experience that stayed with you. Swimming with the waterfall in front of you felt like stepping into a postcard, and even if you decided not to go in, standing at the base of such a powerful cascade was worth the climb down.
Lunch and the Maleku Village
After the hike back up from the waterfall, we visited a Maleku Indigenous village. Inside the Palenke, the main house, community members shared their history, traditions, and art, and it was a reminder that Costa Rica’s culture is just as important to experience as its nature.
Lunch followed right after, and it was a traditional hot meal that gave everyone the chance to refuel before the afternoon hike. Next to the restaurant was a butterfly garden and a frog pond, so instead of sitting around waiting for food, we had the chance to walk around and enjoy another piece of the day.
Hiking Around Arenal Volcano
The afternoon took us to the base of Arenal Volcano, where the trail started in primary forest before leading out to the old lava fields. Walking beneath giant trees with roots that twisted across the ground made the hike feel almost prehistoric. The guides had sharp eyes and spotted monkeys, sloths, and birds that we would never have noticed on our own.
Eventually, the forest opened onto black rock left from the 1968 eruption. Standing there with Arenal Volcano towering above us was unforgettable. From the top viewpoint, we could see Lake Arenal in the distance, the valley below, and the volcano rising in front of us. It was one of those moments where everyone stopped talking and just took in the view.
Relaxing in the Hot Springs
After a full day of hiking and exploring, we finished at one of La Fortuna’s natural hot spring resorts. Slipping into the warm pools felt incredible after hours on the trails, and the tropical plants around the springs made it feel peaceful and private. The complimentary cocktail was the final touch, and everyone in the group seemed to melt into the water as we talked quietly about the highlights of the day.
We spent about an hour there, which felt just right. It gave us time to relax and unwind without stretching the day too long. By the time we got back to the hotel, it felt like we had done so much but still ended on a calm note.
Why This Tour Stands Out
The Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall, and Hot Springs Tour is special because of how well it is organized. The activities are balanced, the breaks are timed well, and the flow of the day makes sense. You start with walking, move into culture and lunch, hike around the volcano, and then end in the hot springs. Nothing felt out of place, and the whole group seemed to enjoy each stage of the trip.
It also offers great value because instead of booking the waterfall, the volcano, and the hot springs separately, you get them all in one experience. If you have limited time in La Fortuna, this tour gives you a full look at what the area is known for.
Tips for the Tour
Wear sneakers or hiking shoes with good grip for the trails and stairs.
Bring a swimsuit and towel for both the waterfall and the hot springs.
A light rain jacket is helpful since the weather around Arenal can change quickly.
Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Keep your camera ready because there are views and wildlife sightings everywhere.
So, should you go??
Definately!! The Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall, and Hot Springs Tour gave us one of the most complete experiences we have had in Costa Rica. In a single day we hiked by a river, swam at a waterfall, visited an Indigenous village, trekked around Arenal, and soaked in hot springs. Each part of the tour added something different, and by the end of the day it felt like we had seen the best of La Fortuna without ever being rushed.
If you are looking for a way to cover the highlights of La Fortuna in one day, this tour is an easy choice. It is well planned, family friendly, and a great introduction to the region whether it is your first time in Costa Rica or your tenth.
